How does my health insurance work?

What is a Premium?

The premium for an individual could start as low as $0 a month, depending on age and yearly income, and be as much as the base cost for the plan.

The premium for a family could start as low as $40 a month, depending on age, household size and yearly income and also be as much as the base cost for the plan.

What is a Deductible?

This is the initial amount you pay out of pocket. Like other forms of insurance, the deductible can vary depending on how much exposure you are comfortable with. In general, the higher the deductible, the lower the premium. Bronze plans have a higher deductible but are much cheaper than Silver plans which can have a lower deductible.

What is a Co-payment?

This is the amount you pay each time you receive medical services. It is typically associated with coverage through a Health Maintenance Organization. For example, each time you visit your doctor you may have to pay a $10 copay for primary care and a $50 copay for a visit to a specialist. These payments now contribute to your policy’s max-out-of-pocket. Co-payments and co-insurance are different methods insurance carriers use to manage their risk within the structure of your policy.

What is a Co-insurance?

This is the percentage of covered expenses that are paid by the insurance policy. For example, there may be an 80/20 split between the insured and the insurance company in which the insured pays 20% of the cost of care after the deductible is met and until the policy’s max-out-of pocket is reached.

What is a Max-out of pocket?
A maximum out-of-pocket is the highest amount you would have to pay for covered healthcare services in a given year under your health insurance plan. It is a financial protection that sets a limit on the total expenses you would have to cover out of your own pocket. Once you reach this maximum amount, your insurance company will generally cover 100% of the costs for covered services. It includes deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that you are responsible for paying. This helps ensure that even if you face significant medical expenses, there is a cap on how much you would have to spend, providing you with some peace of mind and financial security.
